The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Strategic Stability and Nuclear Risks

Discover our past event at the commons: This session was one of three learning moments in December focused on exploring different aspects of Artificial Intelligence. The event delved into the recent advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) that were expected to bring significant, if not disruptive, improvements in various dimensions of warfare, including missile defense, electronic warfare, and cyber warfare. It also explored the potential for new strategic challenges and unprecedented nuclear risks, while highlighting the positive developments in terms of transparency and verification that AI could offer.

The session drew on the publication of a series of SIPRI reports that mapped out and compared regional perspectives on the topic. A panel of highly respected experts from Europe, the USA, East Asia, and South Asia discussed how AI could impact the field of nuclear weapons and doctrine, strategic stability, and nuclear risk at the regional and transregional levels. The panel also explored measures that states, and the international security community could explore to prevent and mitigate these challenges and risks. This event was held at the Knowledge and Learning Commons in collaboration with SIPRI - Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.
