Celebrating Languages, Enriching Research: International Mother Language Day 2025

At the UN Library & Archives Geneva, we recognize that linguistic diversity is essential for preserving and sharing knowledge, supporting multilateral diplomacy, and ensuring inclusive research. On this International Mother Language Day, celebrated each year on 21 February, we’re joining in efforts to highlight why languages matter for our world.

Languages are a critical part of our identity and cultural heritage, how we communicate and engage in societies and communities, and how we develop and learn. According to UNESCO*, more than 8,000 languages are spoken and signed in the world today. Yet, many are at risk of disappearing as our world rapidly changes, and only a few hundred have been integrated into education systems and the public domain.

In 2025, International Mother Language Day celebrates its Silver Jubilee, marking 25 years of efforts in advocating for linguistic diversity. This year, the focus is on multilingual education as a force for inclusive societies, equitable education, and sustainable development for all.

Here at the Library & Archives, we work to support awareness of multilingualism and facilitate access to multilingual resources. Here are some ways to make use of our resources in many languages!

Resource Guide on Multilingualism

In our Resource Guide on Multilingualism, you’ll find a curated range of resources about multilingualism at the United Nations, as well as UN documents and publications, online dictionaries and news resources, and selected resources from our catalogue in a range of languages. This guide is available in English, French and Spanish.

News resources from across the world

You can also find a range of newspapers, magazines, publications and databases in our collection. And, if you’re a Library account holder with access to our on-site services in Geneva, you can take advantage of newspapers and magazines in more than 60 languages. Find out more here

Collections in more than 100 languages

Our collections include resources in more than 123 languages. Explore the themes and topics of interest to you by consulting the Global Search Catalogue, your single point of access to the Library's print and electronic collections. Find some inspiration in your search here, with recent books on topics of interest in different languages. And, explore resources on multilingual education, the theme of this year’s celebrations.

Or, if you’re interested in the history of modern multilateralism, the UN Archives Geneva platform gives access to the fonds and collections managed by the UN Library and Archives Geneva, including the archives of the United Nations in Geneva, the League of Nations (1919-1946), international peace movements (from 1870), and private papers.
